It’s Snowing on Mars
Monday, September 29th, 2008The stream was flat and glimmery, framed by tall inward curving banks of trees. I sat on the small bridge, in traffic, on the way home from work. As I looked out my window the sunlight grew brighter, pouring through the leaves and casting them golden (though most were still green).
On Mars, the Phoenix lander can “see” snow falling a couple of kilometers above it. Flakes evaporating before they hit the ground.
Right now, here, it is ink-black beyond my window. Just the sounds of the highway and cicadas out there. In here it is the tap-tapping of the keyboard and distant tv. The sky seems so high above me.
