January 2007 Archives
White sky, broken into a million delicate fragments. A stately falling down. Slow as dreams. An ever more pale landscape. Backgrounding it: Madeleine Peyroux smoothly singing, "Smile" (from, Half the Perfect World). I'm thinking of standing in snow fall. How quiet it is. The world, gone to slow white fantasy. I'm thinking of looking up into that snow globe swirl. Catch a crystal on my tongue, and --
"-- find that life is still worthwhile...if you just smile."
It's a ghost morning, the pale on the ground going from blue to white as the day opens up. Cold again, now. Winter again. The sky is smoky silver.
I'm thirsty. It's quiet. The salt trucks are keeping the streets clear. Gotta pack a lunch. It is a long day, today...
In the pale morning rain light, the streets look like silver. The sky is the color of old ice. Traffic crawls. Coffee pushes back a headache.
And all else is quiet...
Zipping through my day-off -- but having the time at is nice. The holidays blurred by faster than ever. Now it is a new year, in the middle of a shy winter, and I am using the day for small things and pleasantries. Good coffee and grocery lists, laundry, and sitting at my desk cleaning my glasses. Taking down some Christmas decorations, outside and within. I kind of feel like I am catching up, just a bit...
My Christmas gift "from me, to me" this year was a sushi kit that I snagged in the grocery store. Here are some shots of my first two attempts at making my own vegetarian sushi:

(Avocado and carrots, with the extra rice rolled into balls and sprinkled with sesame seeds.)

(Just avocado in these; it was all I had left. But I rolled 'em two different ways this time. And topped the extra rice balls with avocado slices, too...)
They actually tasted pretty good, but I definitely need more practice making a nice even roll...
It is like Spring out there, today. The air is expansive and fresh.
I'm still doing the small things, here.
But it feels good.
Hello 2007. Wow, that came quick.
Here's to a safe, healthy and happy New Year!
